Look Beneath The Surface
HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS MODERN DAY SLAVERY
|
Hawaii is a hub for human trafficking, which is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Victims often go unnoticed because they usually work in jobs with low visibility to the general public.
They are laborers in farm fields or sweatshops, dishwashers in restaurants, landscape workers and janitors. They are women and young girls who are forced into the sex trade. Victims are brought to the islands from all over the world. Trafficking recruiters deceive them, promising good living conditions and decent wages. After they arrive, their passports are taken away and they are forced to work in terrible conditions for little or no pay. It could be happening in your neighborhood, no matter where you live. So take a good look around, and contact 808HALT if you think someone is being exploited. |
Human trafficking victims come from many different countries. Learn the SIGNS of human trafficking in Hawaii HERE. Click on the languages above to view808HALT's videos translated into those languages. If you or someone you know in Hawaii needs help, call the Pacific Gateway Center at 808-851-7010.

Red Flags: Recognize the Signs Victims appear to be under someone else's control. They may exhibit submissive or fearful behavior. They don't manage their own money or have identification documents.
